The most iconic racecar drivers of all time

When you think of fleet companies and delivery drivers, you probably don’t associate them with being “cool”. But why not? You should!

Racecar drivers however are known across the globe for being brave, exciting, and of course, cool.

So we thought we’d take a look at some of the most iconic racecar drivers of all time.

Michael Schumacher

Let’s start with a household name.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you have no doubt heard of the great German racecar driver, Michael Schumacher.

Arguably the most famous racecar driver of all time, Mr Schumacher boasts several impressive accolades, including:

  • Seven Formula One championship titles
  • An unbeaten record for the most race wins (91)
  • The most races won in a single season
  • The fastest laps set

Schumacher also saved Ferarri’s racing reputation. They hadn’t won a title since 1979 until Schumacher signed with them in 1996.

Graham Hill

Despite passing away in 1975, Graham Hill is still regarded as a verry famous racecar driver.

To this day, he is the only driver to see success at the “Triple Crown of Motorsport”. This encompassed three events:

  • The Monaco Grand Prix
  • The Indianapolis 500
  • The 24 Hours of Le Mans

The British native saw 14 wins across his relatively short career before he and his team died tragically at the hands of a plane crash in 1975.

His legacy was, however, carried on by his son, Damian, who also secured a Formula One title, making them the only father-and-son duo to achieve that honour.

Sébastien Loeb

Sébastien Loeb is recognised the world over as being the most successful racecar driver of all time.

A former gymnast, the French-born driver saw 79 wins over his career and smashed several records along the way.

For example, starting in 2004, Loeb won the World Rally Championship every single year until his 2012 retirement.

He also holds WRC records for the most:

  • Podiums
  • Stage wins
  • Event wins

making him the most decorated WRC racecar driver of all time.

Sebastien also appeared at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the X Games and the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb, where he smashed yet another record at 8:13.878 (since beaten by Romain Dumas).

Lewis Hamilton

Another household name, this new-era racecar driver set the record as the first (and only) black Formula One participant.

Lewis Hamilton is widely regarded as being a beacon of hope and inspiration for young racecar drivers. Having won his first Formula One (2008) title in his 20’s, Hamilton’s talent has become indisputable. With a total tally of 99 wins, the British star has set the record for the most Grand Prix wins in Formula One.

He also holds a tied record of seven World Driver Championship titles with none other than Michael Schumacher.

Juan Manuel Fangio

A veteran of the game, JMF was one of the first successful Formula One drivers.

He was nicknamed “El Chueco” (bowlegged) and “el Maestro” (the master) and boasted five World Drivers’ Championships titles, a record he held for 46 years until Michael Schumacher came along.

He remains the only Argentinian-born driver to win his home country’s Grand Prix, and to this day holds the highest win rate- 46%.

Fernando Alonso

This Spanish superstar is widely considered one of the most talented racecar drivers alive.

Coming from a not-so-wealthy family background, Alonso started in a go-kart and made his way to his 2001 Formula One debut, shortly winning back-to-back titles in 2005 and 2006.

After barely losing out to Sebastian Vettel in 2010, 2011 and 2012, Alonso’s more recent achievements include winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2018 and 2019, and also the World Endurance Championships in those same years.

And, he won the 24 Hours of Daytona in 2019!
