VouchForMe’s top 5 Christmas songs

23.12.2020

Christmas is just around the corner, and over the next few days, thousands of motorists will take to the roads. It’s a busy time of year on the roads. Everyone’s eager to get home, but don’t speed or get frustrated with traffic. Take it easy, put on the radio, and tune in to some of the best driving songs this Christmas.

Chris Rea – Driving Home for Christmas

Let’s get this one out the way first! You can’t have a Christmas journey without this song. Its mellow tones, smooth lyrics, and the pure feeling of nostalgia it invokes in so many people make it a great piece to put on as you start your journey.

Slade – Merry Xmas Everyone

If you’ve been anywhere near a radio in December (and possibly late November.) You’ve already heard Slade’s song far too many times this year, and yet every time it comes on, you’ll find yourself merrily humming along to the chorus. So put it on while driving, and in the comfort of your own car, you can sing out loud to your heart’s content.

The Jackson 5 – Santa Claus is coming to town.

An excellent song for the midpoint of the journey when the kids start to get restless and might start asking the dreaded “Are we there yet?” question. Put on the Jackson five and quickly remind them that they still need to behave for one more night.

The Pogues & Kirsty Maccoll – Fairytale of New York

A good one to put on once the kids have nodded off in the back. Shane McGowen’s sweary song follows the story of a young couple as they break up at Christmas. More cynical than wholesome, but still a top Christmas song.

Born to Run – Bruce Springsteen

After you’ve spent an hour or so in the car, it’s time for a break from Christmas music. Put on a classic road trip song instead. Springsteen’s Born to Run, ACDC’s Highway to hell, or Whitesnake’s Here I go again. All fantastic driving songs, and will give you and your family a much Have a break from Christmas songs, for the sake of your sanity.

Chris de Burgh – A Spaceman came travelling

As you’re arriving at the destination and it’s time to wake the kids up, you may as well do it in style. So put on A Spaceman came travelling. Not only is it a beautiful song, but it’s got one of the loudest choruses of any Christmas song. Finish your journey off with a rousing yell of “LA LA LA LA.”

Well, that’s our top 5 Christmas songs, along with a handful of bonus driving songs. What did you think of our selection? Are you eager to listen to these tunes, or did we put you off Christmas music until 2025?
